Acne is a skin disorder due to the over secretion of oil glands and blockage of hair follicles due to the action of hormones and other substances. These factors lead to infected openings commonly called pimples. These are most often seen on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne is not a serious health problem, but sometimes serious acne conditions can leave permanent scars or markings.

The exact reason for acne appearance is yet to be known. Doctors believe that it is due to the hyper secretion of sex hormones. These hormones increase both in boys and girls at the puberty stage and cause the sebaceous glands to swell and make more sebum. These hormonal changes are found during pregnancy also.

Acne is also a factor of heredity. The tendency of developing pimples can be inherited from parents. In some cases, drugs or inferior greasy cosmetics also are causes for pimples. Basic reasons for pimples to arise are due to changes in the hormone levels, pressure due to helmets, backpacks and tight sports uniforms, hard rubbing of skin, pollution, high humidity, and dirty skin. Stress does not cause pimples by itself, but stress can make pimples worse.

People of all ages are prone to pimples. They are commonly found in young adults and teenagers. Generally, people between ages 11 and 30 develop pimples. For some of them these pimples disappear over time, while for others, pimples develop during their forties and fifties.

Generally, acne is treated by skin specialists. They may give medicines for overall applications and few for taking orally. Doctors consider the skin type and prescribe medicines. Some medicines may cause side effects, but they often decrease or go away after the medicines are used continuously. Few of these medicines are not given to teenagers and pregnant women as they are considered to be too strong. The time for these pimples to be cured is usually 4 to 8 weeks. Doctors may change the course of medicines for patients for whom pimples recur.

Teenagers and adults can become depressed due to the appearance of pimples on their skin, especially on the face. Pimples causing scars can be avoided by quick treatments.

People with acne should wash their face gently with a mild cleanser twice a day, morning and at night. Touching, squeezing, or picking pimples can lead to scars on the skin. Men who shave need to be careful, and they should shave gently so as not to aggravate the acne.
